FLIP

FLIP is a choreographic creation on quad rollers specifically designed by Marta Izquierdo for the public space as well as a tribute to Eric Martin, an exceptional contemporary dancer and former figure skater.

This is a special piece for the two choreographic artists, a sort of fictional and offbeat double autobiography where they look back on their young years. Those of Eric who, after a high-level sporting career ended abruptly by a serious fall, was entrusted at the age of 25 with the choreography of the ice and rollerblading parts of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Albertville Olympic Games (1992). Those of Marta in Madrid in the 80s who, long before putting on dancing shoes, put on roller skates and sped off at full speed to escape the dark years of the dictatorship, intoxicated by the wind of crazy freedom that then constituted the madrileña movida.

Accomplices for many years, they combine their common love of popular culture and board sports to bring skating back to where they discovered it and avidly practiced it: in the street.

FLIP is an acrobatic skating figure, a run-up, a youthful jump. “Flipper” is a colloquial verb expressing fear in French, while “flipper” in Spanish is a synonym for “kiffer”.
FLIP is this fictional character, a sort of harlequin on quad rollerblades and twirling sticks who; by turns naive, virtuoso, dreamy, funny or threatening; loves his fears as much as he is afraid of being loved.
